BCIS 3610.004 Spring 2008

Notes:

5/5 Grades are posted.  There was a 2.8 question curve on the exam.  The scores were pretty good.  I have all of your scores posted for the entire semester.  It has been a good class.  Best of luck to each of you.

4/21 OK, sorry if you checked and your grades weren't available, my database got corrupted.  I copied and pasted out of the spreadsheet I am using.  Notice on your grads now a posted final grade.  This is the grade I plan on assigning each of you at this point assuming you do not take the final.  As I said the in the previous post, the final cannot hurt you .  It can only help you.  Anyway, this should help each of you make the decision of whether or not to take the final.

4/21 Grades are posted.  That was a pretty good class average.  I did go ahead and curve the exam to raise the class average to 77 percent.  This results in 2.75 correct responses being added to your score (works out to about 7.3 points out of 200).  The curve is already reflected in your posted scores.  I went ahead and applied the curve to everyone even though it made a few people score higher than the 200 points possible (205 was the high).  I've also assigned all 20 participation points to everybody.  So, now, each of you should be able to decide on whether or not you want to take the final because with the exception of the final, all your grades are in.  Lastly, check over your posted grades to makes sure that what you think you have and that what I think you have are the same things.

4/16 Please not the time change for the final exam.  I just got an updated final exam schedule and it shows our final exam as Monday from 1:30-3:30.  So, same day, just starting 30 minutes earlier that initially anticipated.  Do not confuse this with the second exam coming up on the 21st.

4/7 Grades are posted.  The grades you see include a 2 point curve.  With the curve, the average wasn't too bad.  What little feedback I got in class suggested that this one was tougher than you all expected.  Also posted are the totals for the top 4 homework grades that I have on file.  Check your grades and make sure they are in line with want you think you have in this class.  This should give you a sense of where you stand grade wise going into the second exam and final.  There have been a couple of questions about that remaining 20 points.  If attendance stays high, then I will reward all 20 to everyone.  If not, then parts of it will be "pop" quizzes at my discretion.

4/3 Please re-download the zipped database file to the left.  While the database files and pics are all the same, there are some other files included needed for assignment 6.  Specifically, text files which need to be imported.  Thank you to the student that pointed this out.

3/24 Someone pointed out after class about the missing picture files that are needed in Project 5.  The Database file to the left now has both databases and pictures.  Having said that, you need to go through the process of implementing the OLE objects but they do not necessarily have to be perfect (i.e. a guy's picture with a girl's name, etc).  The goal is to go through the process and be familiar with how and what the benefits of embedding OLE objects are.

3/21 I will not have my regularly scheduled office hours on 3/28 due to a scheduling conflict.  If you need to see me, I will be back in my office Monday morning.   Also, if you want to get started on the final Access assignment, the database link to the left has the zipped databases solved through tutorial 4.  This will make sure you are all starting on even footing for the final project.

3/10 Grades are in.  Better class average.  Everybody who took the test also turned in their HW which is good (means you get credit for taking the quiz).  There were still a few with missing parts of the HW.  You need to turn in everything to receive full credit.  I've been pretty lax until now.  Have a great Spring Break.

3/7 Just a heads up about the quiz on Monday.  Looking through the questions that were missed on the previous quiz, I noticed a pattern.  Most people did very well on the questions asking for information resulting from the output of your homework.  The questions that were missed most were from the book itself.  You need to read the contents of the Access book.  Especially bolded type just.  Hope this helps.

3/3 Grades are posted.  A few things to keep in mind.  You MUST turn in your homework to get your quiz grade.  Just the cover sheet does not suffice.  Also, there were a number of homeworks that were "a little light" meaning they were missing substantial parts of the assignment.  I have been pretty lenient up to this point but will count off for it in the future.  Be sure to do everything.  It is not fair to those who do take the time to complete everything.  Lastly, I had three student that were working off of an old assignment sheet and did the wrong case.  Make sure you are regularly checking my site for the most recent material.  We are using the InPerson fitness case.  Lastly, notice the link "databases" to the left.  It is a zipped file containing the solutions following Tutorial 2 and Case 2.  Use these databases to begin Tutorial 3 and Case 3.  This will ensure that you are using a complete version and that everybody is starting at the same spot.  You will probably have to right click and save locally to a thumb drive or your hard drive.

2/25 Grades are posted.  The Access assignment is due next week (3/3).  We'll go over the exam questions missed most, the stuff for next week, then we'll take the quiz.  Have a good week.

2/11 Grades are posted.  The grades were quite a bit lower.  I curved the grades up 2 points to make it a little more respectable.  Your grades that are posted already reflect that curve.  We will cover the most frequently missed items in class next Monday.  Have a good week.

  • 2/4  OK, grades are posted.  Now that was a pretty good class average.  First, I noticed a few wandering eyes.  Keep you eyes on your own paper.  Also, even after stressing it in class, I still had a couple of people who took the quiz and did NOT turn in their homework.   As a result, they get a 0 on the quiz.  Also, there are a couple who have still not turned in the last page of the syllabus.  They tentatively have a grade of 0 on the quiz until they have turned it in.  As for the results, check the grades page to the left.  There is a breakdown of the grades at the bottom.

  • 1/30 For the Project files on the left, right click the file and select "Save Target As".  You will then be prompted to save the file somewhere locally.  You should probably save it to your hard drive if you are using a laptop or your personal pc or to a thumb drive if you come to campus to work on your assignments.

  • 1/17 I just got an email regarding internship opportunities, something about IT Auditing.  There may be a few of you interested so:
